Kilimani Deaf Blind Unit was established on 17^th June 2002.  Parents of deaf blind children in Nairobi started the unit in a private set-up, at St. Christopher Primary School with 4 children.  After 4 years, the deaf blind unit was relocated to a government school, Kilimani Primary School with the aid of the current head of the unit, SHIA International, City Education and the Ministry of Education.  Currently the school now has 19 deaf blind children, 8 teachers paid by the teachers’ service commission and 2 teacher aids paid by the ministry of education.

SEP selected Kilimani deaf blind unit in one of our projects and we have been working with the Head teacher and teachers, where the unit received a total facelift as the situation before was in dire need of assistance. 

·        A sensory room, language room, movement room, main learning area and a kitchen were created. 

·        A Toy making workshop was organized and all the toys made were put in the relevant rooms for the children of the unit.

·        Workshop on Sensory Integration.

·        Hearing tests for all the children at the unit.

The new unit has now been fully adapted to suit the specific needs of deaf blind children.
